Despite its release having been delayed by a couple of weeks, little can dampen our enthusiasm for the Xperia SP, the latest addition to Sony’s excellent Xperia smartphone range. Promising a full HD entertainment experience and stunning premium design, it was definitely worth the wait.
Seeing as Sony’s latest television advertising campaign also focuses on their past, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to take a look back at the Xperia range. Let’s begin with…
Where it all started: Xperia X1 and X2
First released in 2008, the Xperia X1 was a high-end smartphone designed and built by HTC. An arc-slider phone, the X1 was the first Sony Ericsson mobile to use the Windows Mobile operating system, employing a panel interface, push email, an RSS feed aggregator and handwriting recognition as standard. The phone even had an elaborate video advertising campaign entitled Who is Johnny X?, the entire series of shorts still available to view on YouTube. The trailer for these can be viewed below.
The Xperia X2 came out in 2009, this newer model including an 8.1 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity, firmly establishing Sony’s increasing focus on the smartphone section of the industry.
Xperia X10
The X10 was the long-time flagship handset of the Xperia series, and the first to feature the Android operating system. With a solid 1GHz processor and impressive 8.1 megapixel camera (including an LED for shooting in poor lighting conditions and x16 digital zoom), this 2010 smartphone could definitely hold its own in the hardware stakes.
For many, the Xperia X10 was their first smartphone, and with the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro both released later that year, the handset easily found its place in a variety of different roles and lifestyles.
Xperia Play
The Xperia Play, released in 2011, is arguably one of the Xperia range’s most iconic handsets. An innovative combination of smartphone and handheld games console, the device was the first to be part of the PlayStation certified program, meaning that users got access to the impressive PlayStation Mobile games selection.
The perfect marriage of an Xperia X10-style horizontal sliding body and the PSP Go’s compact inbuilt gamepad, the Xperia Play’s solid specs and intuitive use of the Android operating system made it a popular choice for gamers and tech fiends alike.
Xperia Z
The Xperia Z, released in February this year, is an outstanding piece of tech. Water, dust and scratch-resistant, the Xperia Z is tough as well sleek, offering you a smartphone that is as attractive as it is durable. With powerful hardware beneath the hood and a camera that packs a whopping 13 megapixels, it’s sure to prove the perfect companion even if you’re someone who’s prone to accidental handset abuse.

Xperia SP
With a precision crafted co-moulded aluminium frame and gorgeous 4.6″ 720p HD touchscreen, the brand-new Xperia SP is quite a sight to behold. A fast-capture 8 megapixel camera capable of taking great photos even in poor lighting conditions sets the high-quality tone for this handset, it also including an inbuilt Battery STAMINA Mode in order to help you make the most of your charge. Additionally, its unique colour-changing illuminated ‘belt’ helps keep you notified of any messages and even pulses to music.
