The Xperia Z is said to be “the best of Sony in a smartphone”.  As one of the world’s favourite technology brands, Sony has a lot of ‘bests’ to offer, having started out with TVs and Walkmans and since expanded into products as diverse as gaming consoles and mobile phones.

Inspired by the Xperia Z TV ad, we wanted to find out more about all of the great bits of electronic kit Sony has brought us over the years and present what we found in a pretty slick timeline.

The birth of Sony Mobile

Founded in post-World War II Japan, Sony began its life with just $530 in capital and eight employees. Nearly 70 years later, the company is one of the biggest multinational businesses today, and has brought us a whole host of iconic gadgets and appliances.

In 1968, the first Trinitron colour television was developed, and 11 years later the first Walkman was sold – arguably the most famous of all Sony’s products. 1994 welcomed into the world the phenomenon that was the PlayStation, while 2001 saw Sony branch into the world of mobile phones via its partnership with Ericsson. Sony Mobile was born in 2012, when Sony bought out Ericsson’s share of the Sony Ericsson partnership.

Continuing where previous Sony products have left off, the Xperia Z brings all of the best bits of Sony technology together in one package (and then some). Running Android, the Xperia Z is dust and water resistant (check out our beer test video for proof).  In addition to this, the handset offers stunning photo quality, vibrant display, a quad-core 1.5GHz processor and PlayStation Mobile gaming. For more detailed information on the specs, check out our previous Xperia Z blog post.
